Hosting Information

Red Cross Courses Available to Host

1.  Red Cross Sport First Aid

Sport First Aid is an 18-20 hr. certification course suitable for coaches, trainers, sport leaders and volunteers who need certification in Standard First Aid and CPR and have an interest in learning about sport injury prevention and care.  The registration fee includes:  the Sport First Aid manual;  the Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR manual; and a Red Cross Sport First Aid Certificate valid for 3 years.   No prerequisites are required to take this course.

Scenarios dealing with the following sport-specific topics will be covered during this course:

  • Planning for Sport Safety
  • Preventing injury through proper training
  • Preparing to help injured athletes
  • Your safety plan
  • Head and spine injuries
  • Injuries to soft tissue and bone.

Other topics covered include:

  • AED training
  • Airway/breathing emergencies
  • AR and breathing conditions - exercise-induced asthma
  • CPR adult and infant
  • Bleeding emergencies (incl. scrapes, small cuts and nose bleeds
  • Shock
  • Concussions (prevention of, use of helmets) with sport-related scenarios
  • Wounds
  • Medical conditions/allergic reactions
  • Heat/cold conditions
  • Warm-up and cool-down - student participation important
  • First Aid Kit

2.  Sport Injury Prevention & Care (SIPAC) with CPR*

This 1 day workshop is designed for coaches, trainers, league organizers, fitness professionals and sport enthusiasts who require CPR/AED certification. The emphasis in this course is on common sport injuries (strains, sprains, fractures, concussions).  Highlights include:  facility checks; emergency action plan; creating a sport first aid kit; and return to play.  With the registration fee participants will receive a Sport First Aid manual, CPR booklet, CPR certificate, and a SIPAC letter of completion.  No prerequisites are required.

* This course is also offered without the CPR component if certification is not required.

3.  Sport Wrapping & Taping - Level 1

This 8-hr workshop is a beginner course designed for participants who have little or no previous knowledge of sport injury prevention and care.  Participants will learn and practice how to assess, prevent, and care for common sport injuries with the proper use of taping and wrapping techniques.  Any easy to understand, step-by-step manual and all wrapping and taping supplies are included in the registration fee.  Upon completion of the workshop, participants will receive a letter of completion.  No prerequisites are required.

4.  Sport Wrapping & Taping - Review

This 4 hr. practical workshop is a review of the wrapping and taping techniques learned in Level 1.  It is designed for those who have had some wrapping and taping experience and some general knowledge of sport injury prevention and care.  This hands-on course gives participants the opportunity to practice and perfect these techniques under the guidance of a qualified instructor.  A comprehensive, step-by-step manual and all materials are included in the registration fee.  Upon completion of the workshop, participants will receive a letter of completion.

Hosting SAO Sport Safety Courses

Benefits of Hosting

By offering Sport First Aid and/or Sport Wrapping & Taping clinics at your facility, you are assisting in the education and development of coaches, trainers, leaders and sport volunteers by providing them with up-to-date and practical information on sport injury prevention and care. With the knowledge and skills gained through participating in these unique programs, you are also helping to create a safe environment in which the members of your communities can participate in sport and recreational activities.   You can offset the cost of hosting these programs (and potentially generate revenue for your school or community) through the collection of registration fees (see suggested participant fees listed below).    

Sport Safety Program hosts include, but are not limited to: communities, recreation departments, sport councils, provincial sport organizations, universities, community colleges or high schools, and private sport medicine clinics.      

Pre-course Responsibilities

As a host, you are responsible for scheduling a date for the course(s) through the Sport Alliance of Ontario, advertising the course, registering participants, ordering course materials and returning the paperwork upon completion of the course(s). 

Here is what you need to do to get started:

  • decide which of the courses listed above you would like to host
  • select a date and location for your course and complete an Application to Host and Host Agent Agreement
  • contact the instructor (SAO will book the instructor on your behalf from their list of Course Conductors in your area)  
  • complete a Material Order FormThis form includes the prices of the materials required for the course. 

As mentioned above, the Host Agency is responsible for taking registrations and collecting the participant fee for each course.  We suggest that each participant pay in advance to reserve a spot.  Here are some suggested guidelines for what fee to charge your participants:

The Host Agency is responsible for paying the instructor immediately following the course.  Instructor fees are as follows:

Sport First Aid - $350

Sport First Aid Recertification - $275

SIPAC with CPR - $225

Sport Wrapping and Taping 8hr. - $300

Sport Wrapping and Taping 4hr. - $150

Once you know the final number of participants, please complete the Material Order Form and fax it to the Program Coordinator at (416) 426-7314, or email it to hstephens@sportalliance.com.  If you do not own CPR mannequins and an AED trainer, (required for workshops 1, 2, & 3) you can rent them from your nearest Red Cross branch - www.redcross.ca - or from the course instructor.

Facility Requirements

All SAO courses must be taught in a location that will promote maximum learning and provide comfort and safety to all participants. Each location should have the following:

  • Adequate seating for all participants
  • Mats or kneeling pads for all participants
  • Adequate lighting and ventilation
  • A minimum of 15 square feet of space for each student.

The training location must have the following teaching aids:

  • An overhead projector and extra bulb
  • A projection screen
  • One flip chart or white/black board with appropriate writing materials
  • One triangular bandage per candidate*
  • Splinting materials*
  • Blankets*
  • Mannequins -  one adult (and infant if required) for every participant*
  • AED (Automated External De-fibrillation) Trainer(s)*. 

* The instructor may be able to bring these items to the classroom.  If not, they can be requested from the Sport Alliance of Ontario.

Post-course Responsibilities

Upon completion of the course(s), please ensure that the following forms are filled out and returned promptly to the Program Coordinator, Sport Safety Programs, Sport Alliance of Ontario, 3 Concorde Gate, Suite 313, Toronto, ON  M3C 3N7:

  • Participant Profile / Course Evaluation Form 
  • Course Roster(s)
