Sport Injury Surveillance Project (SISP)!

The SISP was initiated to record and report on non-catastrophic sport and recreational injuries and to provide the PSOs, coaches, parents and participants evidence-based information regarding who is being injured, the nature of the injury, the mechanism of the injury and the environment in which the injury occurs. This information can ultimately lead to the creation of preventive programs to help reduce the incidence and severity as well as the economic, personal and social burden of injuries related to sport, recreation and play.

The SRISP will also aid SAO’s mission of being a leader in the sporting world, especially given recent media and community interest in injury in sport as is evident by:

  1. The Federal government’s introduction of Bill 616, calling for a national sports injury surveillance and data collection system;
  2. The Federal government’s announcement in March that $5 million in funding would be made available for not-for-profit agencies working on sport injury prevention issues; and
  3. ThinkFirst Canada’s launch of concussion awareness video and pre-season workshops for coaches, athletes and parents.

It couldn’t be timelier, therefore, to introduce SAO’s response to this national problem!

How will SAOs Sport Injury Surveillance Project benefit the sporting community?

  • Generate an ongoing, in-depth and consistent data base for monitoring sport injury patterns of children and youth throughout Ontario.
  • Track the cause of injuries and identify risk factors.
  • Report on injury type and frequency that PSOs can post on their websites.
  • Monitor injury trends, initiate rule changes and improve training techniques.
  • Allow for ongoing assessment, surveillance, research and evaluation to support the development of effective injury prevention programs, policies and practices.
  • Help coaches, trainers and volunteers identify children and youth at high risk for injury and provide them with individualized injury prevention strategies and programs.
  • Give PSOs the foundation to develop targeted, evidence-based interventions, strategies and policies which will continue after the Project funding runs out and into the future.
  • Promote Long Term Athlete Development  (LTAD).
  • Help to make a measureable difference in the individual experience of the athlete.

What incentives does SAO provide PSOs to join the Project?

  1. Customized, sport-specific injury forms available both on-line and in paper formats.
  2. Analysis and interpretation of data by experts in epidemiology at York University.
  3. Financial assistance for human resources, computer equipment and software, printing and general administration of the Project.
  4. Training and assistance for PSO staff and interns involved in the Project.
  5. Marketing and communication tools.
  6. Ongoing support for the remaining of the project.

What is the Cycle of Events to make the Project Work?
