Team Ontario

Team Ontario is one of the most accomplished teams in Canada Games history. Team Ontario athletes train and strive towards the goal of attending The Canada Games.

The Canada Games is a highly regarded national multi-sport event for provincial-level athletes who are pursuing high performance development toward national and international competitions. Team Ontario members compete against the best athletes across Canada to decide which province or territory brings home the Canada Games Flag. Team Ontario is comprised of athletes from across the province who qualify through a formal selection process put in place by the Provincial Sport Organizations. Please contact the respective Provincial Sport Organizations for more details on how to qualify.

Sport Alliance Ontario, in partnership with the Government of Ontario, is responsible for coordinating the formation of the provincial team in collaboration with the respective Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs). Sport Alliance Ontario is also responsible for the selection of the Mission Staff who provide support to an assigned sport before, during and after the Canada Games. Team Ontario represents the province every two years, alternating between Winter Games and Summer Games.

2011-2012 Team Ontario Development Grant Program

In April 2007 the Government of Ontario announced the establishment of the Team Ontario Development Grant Program (TODGP). The TODGP was established through the Quest for Gold Program to provide eligible Provincial Sport/Multi-Sport Organizations (PSO/ MSOs) with an opportunity to improve the overall performance of their next Canada Games team. Leading up to the 2009 Canada Summer Games, 17 different sports and over 350 athletes benefited from $682,000 ($341,000 per fiscal year) in funding from the TODGP program. Similarly, leading up to the 2011 Canada Winter Games, 20 different sports and over 225 athletes benefited from TODGP. We are pleased to announce that the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport has renewed their commitment to the Team Ontario Development Grant Program to assist eligible PSOs/MSOs on their progression to the 2013 Canada Summer Games.

The TODGP is delivered by the Sport Alliance of Ontario (SAO) through the support of the Government of Ontario. The overall objective of the TODGP is to provide eligible PSO/MSOs with additional project funding to provide enhanced training, coaching, officiating, sport science and competitive opportunities to prospective athletes who may be included on their next Canada Games team. Contingent on funding availability, the TODGP will be provided for two years in advance of the next Canada Games to those recognized PSO/MSOs representing sports competing in those particular Games.
